{"id":43,"date":"2009-01-12T19:24:12","date_gmt":"2009-01-13T02:24:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/arkansashomeschool.org\/blog\/?p=43"},"modified":"2009-01-12T19:35:59","modified_gmt":"2009-01-13T02:35:59","slug":"famous-home-scholars-thomas-edison","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/arkansashomeschool.org\/index.php\/2009\/01\/12\/famous-home-scholars-thomas-edison\/","title":{"rendered":"Famous Home Scholars: Thomas Edison"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> <w:WordDocument> <w:View>Normal<\/w:View> <w:Zoom>0<\/w:Zoom> <w:Compatibility> <w:BreakWrappedTables \/> <w:SnapToGridInCell \/> <w:WrapTextWithPunct \/> <w:UseAsianBreakRules \/> <\/w:Compatibility> <w:BrowserLevel>MicrosoftInternetExplorer4<\/w:BrowserLevel> <\/w:WordDocument> <\/xml><![endif]--><!--[if !mso]><span class=\"mceItemObject\"   classid=\"clsid:38481807-CA0E-42D2-BF39-B33AF135CC4D\" id=ieooui><\/span>\n<mce:style><!  st1\\:*{behavior:url(#ieooui) } --><\/p>\n<p><!--[endif]--><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">A brave child was born in Ohio during the mid-1800s.<span> <\/span>With his abnormally large head and unusually questioning mind, it took only three months to convince his public school teachers that he was uneducable.<span> <\/span>His mother, knowing better, took over.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><!--more--><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">With persistence, she overcame his \u201cschooling,\u201d teaching him to read classics of history and science.<span> <\/span>At age 13 he desired money for lab equipment and chemicals, and took a job delivering newspapers, always adding to his self-education at public libraries.<span> <\/span>His time was limited because he also published his own newspaper and conducted chemistry experiments in his homemade laboratory.<span> <\/span>Gracefully accepting deafness from an accident, he said it increased his ability to concentrate on his work.<span> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">When a fire ended his work in both chemistry and publication, he turned to the telegraph for earnings.<span> <\/span>After saving the life of a child playing on a railroad, he was rewarded with telegraph operator instruction.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Earning unexpected money from his inventions, he built a successful career as an inventor.<span> <\/span>Along the way, he patented many less well known innovations, such as an electric vote counter, a delayed telegraph for slower transcribers, and a dictating machine.<span> <\/span>He also started use of the word \u201chello\u201d as a telephone greeting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">His famous inventions include the phonograph, the motion picture camera and projector, and, of course, the electric light bulb.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Working closely with Henry Ford and Alexander Bell, he came to \u201ccount his medals by the quart.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201c<em>I owed my success to the fact that I never had a clock in my workroom,<\/em>\u201d was the motto of Thomas A.
