My daughter\u2019s middle school years are over, and although there were not as many cutesy lapbooks or hands-on projects as in the elementary school years, we still achieved a lot of ground both in terms of academics, practical life skills, and character.<\/p>\n

I went into the middle grades with clear goals. I actually wrote them down. You can read them in my\u00a0middle school goal setting post<\/a>. I think setting goals is a\u00a0very<\/strong>\u00a0important task for every homeschool year but\u00a0especially<\/em>\u00a0as you enter a pivotal time such as sixth grade.<\/p>\n

When I say pivotal, I do not mean what most people mean \u2014 that you need to start getting\u00a0scared<\/strong>\u00a0about preparing for high school, buckling down with\u00a0intense<\/strong>\u00a0academic rigor, and ruthlessly deleting the extras that make learning fun.<\/p>\n

Middle school is pivotal because of the\u00a0emotional and physical changes\u00a0<\/strong>going on in your child. How you handle homeschool and parenting for these few years will set the stage for your relationship with your child throughout adolescence and adulthood.\u00a0But don\u2019t get scared!<\/strong>\u00a0These years are really fun.<\/em><\/p>\n

Your child is growing in abstract thought, developing a sense of justice, and trying out new hobbies that may one day become a career. As a parent, you get to\u00a0slowly<\/em>\u00a0begin<\/em>\u00a0that transformation of your child becoming a friend.<\/p>\n
