Rep. David Cook has filed a bad home school bill in the Arkansas Legislature. HB 2144 is on the House Education Committee Agenda for 10 a.m. on Thursday, March 12. This does not mean the bill will be debated that day, but it could be. Hopefully, Committee Chairman Bill Abernathy will schedule a hearing, called a special order of business, on a specific day and time. This will enable home schoolers from all over Arkansas to be present for the hearing. We will let you know the day and time of the hearing once it is scheduled.<\/p>\n
To defeat this bill, we must persuade at least 10 of the 20 members of the House Education Committee to vote against it. Here is how you can help defeat this bill:<\/p>\n
1. E-mail your State Representative, and ask him to vote against HB 2144, the David Cook home school bill. If you know the name of your State Representative, click here<\/a> for his e-mail address. 2. Call and leave a message for your State Representative at the Capitol switchboard. The switchboard is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until around 5 p.m. The switchboard number for the Arkansas House of Representatives is (501) 682-6211.<\/p>\n 3. Contact your State Representative at home over the weekend. Most State Representatives leave Little Rock around noon on Friday, and some don\u2019t return to Little Rock until Monday morning. If you call your State Representative at home, be prepared to discuss the home school bill with him, rather than simply leaving a message.<\/p>\n 4. Contact all your friends, and ask them to e-mail and call their State Representative as well.<\/p>\n Our strategy for defeating this bill depends on a large number of calls and e-mails from people around the state. Our lawmakers need to see that home schoolers should be left alone, and this is a good time to demonstrate this.
