Ask the Readers: Does Your Family Take Summer Vacation?

Summer Vacation. It’s been an educational tradition for schools to break during the summer months.  But does your family take part in this tradition, or do your kids study year-round?

Summer break is rooted in the agricultural history of the United States (personally, I believe it also has something to do with the fact that schoolhouses were not air conditioned until about 50 years ago).  Traditionally, families would work together during the summer months, tending their crops and caring for their livestock.  As a result, schools would close.

These days, fewer and fewer of us still farm for a living. As a result, summer vacation has enjoyed decreasing popularity.  But how about you? Does your family take off from school during the summer months? Drop a comment below, and let us know!

We take it easier in the summer so the kids can swim adn have more time with friends, but we continue studying throughout the summer months. This really helps me children stay on track. I’m not reviewing things they’ve forgotten.

In the past we have taken off at least two months in the summer due to moving and for an opportunity to swim and relax a bit. Now that my husband is retired military and we are in a permanent location, I am revamping our school year to include some school work in the summer and we will take breaks in the cooler months for family camping and vacation.
